Self-Storage Tips
In the Box
- Don’t store irreplaceable items. Photos, jewelry, and heirlooms are best kept with you.
- Wrap breakable items in bubble wrap. Store dishes and glassware in “dishpacks”, specialty boxes.
- Books pack flat, not standing on end. Books are heavy, pack them in small boxes.
- Use uniformly sized boxes. This saves space and makes them easier to stack.
- Label boxes to save time unpacking.
Out of the Box
- Place mattresses in protective covers. Storage can be moist and dusty.
- Clean blankets, draperies and clothing before storing. Pack them on hangers in wardrobe boxes.
- Leather should be treated/conditioned before storage.
- Furniture should be placed on wooden pallets. Blankets can protect furniture and tables from scratches and dust.
- Pillows and Toys: Use large plastic bags.
- Clean and dry appliances. Store them upright with doors ajar for ventilation.
- Mirrors and Pictures: Use suitably knocked down boxes or cardboard for packing.
- Lawn Mowers/Engines: Drain gasoline to avoid fire, explosion and engine damage.
In the Unit
- Place furniture and appliances on wooden pallets. This helps to avoid condensation damage.
- Leave a small airspace for ventilation… between your items and the unit walls.
- Store less needed items at the rear of the unit. Also place more valuable items in the back for safety.
- Place heavier items on the ground and lighter ones on top. Again, more valuable items should be places low and to the back.
- Cover everything with plastic sheeting. This will protect from both dust and moisture.
- Pack your unit as tightly as possible. This will protect from dust and moisture and reduces space needed.
- Use a quality disc (round) padlock. These are hard to cut and offer good protection for the money.
